2021 - A.I.A. UnBuilt Honor Award - Re-use of the Control Center Building at Roosevelt Roards
The re-use of the Control Center building aims to create a precedent on possible ways to reactivate this type of neglected area with multiple uses and initiatives. Amongst the main design considerations are recycling the structure of the existing building. All existing structure is an integral part of the new proposal.
Inspired by elements of vernacular architecture of the area, the facade creates a new image for the building. The main volume of the facade resembles the forms of an ‘hacienda’, while the plasma cut aluminum panels are derived from the shapes of the traditional ironwork of the area. Likewise, the use of arches on the facade and on the first level reference shapes found on many of the houses in Ceiba. The building is intended to work as a multifunctional space that will house local markets on the first floor and a small hotel and restaurant on the second and third floor.
The building uses passive technology elements such as natural light and ventilation to the maximum. The plasma-cut building skin will act as a shield against direct sunlight and heat affecting the structure while the small cut-out patterns allow play of natural light and continous cross ventilation. It also frames the beautiful views to the bay.
